Robert Schumann: ( Part 1) Z6696
String Quartet Opus 41, No. 1 and No.2
CD Reviews
Schumann String Quartet No.1 in a, 41, no.1
and No.3 in A, op.41, no.3 Arabesque Z6696
Perhaps the present offering by the Lark Quartet
will win many converts to this splendid but surprisingly neglected
music. It certainly should. I have been reading enthusiastic reviews
of recitals and recordings by the Lark Quartet for many years,
but this is the first time I have actually heard them. Apart from
having the virtues one always desires in a string quartet, the
group demonstrates here a fine sense of how Schumann’s challenging
music should be played.
Fanfare-November/December 1997
An exceptional recording by the Lark Quartet makes
me doff my beret to this prolific creator of much more than keyboard
music. The women of the Lark are performing String Quartets Nos.
1 and 3. They are scrumptious, the quartets themselves as much
as the Lark’s execution and interpretation. For weeks, I’ve
been slipping the CD into the stereo player, marveling at Schumann’s
compelling kill in this medium. A personal approach without excess
is what the Lark Quartet offers.
